Winning a photo competition is great but winning a competition that is dedicated to one of my photographic hero’s touches me deeply.
In december 1984 I bought my first photobook and yes it was a book of Ed van der Elsken.
At that time I had questions like “why is it that so rough and why is it not straight” but from day one it is was clear to me that there are multiple layers in his work. Layers beyond words, revealing an intimacy that touches our hearts.
My photographic hero’s are the old masters Robert Frank, William Klein, Moriyama Daido, Bruce Gilden and last but not least ED VAN DER ELSKEN.
So it’s a big honour to have an image in the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum that is connected to one of my role models.
A deep bow to you Ed, your work and our beloved streets.
